Is there anywhere I can send my Glass blown items to be fired in a kiln? Glass Blowing?
I am trying to start glass blowing as a hobby. But I do not have a kiln to finish my pieces. Is there a Business where I can send my stuff to have it fired? If you have any ideas or anything at all, please let me know!
Thanks,
TJ Froehlich
Blown glass is not fired. It is cooled to about 900F (depends on the glass) and held to even the tensions and then cooled slowly to about 600F over several hours (depending on thickness) to avoid adding new tensions. Soft glass of any thickness will crack on cooling if this is not done.
Lampworked borosilicate glass (Pyrex, etc.) is much more tolerant of cooling to room temp if somewhat annealed in the flame, but thick pieces should be brought slowly up to annealing temp and then brought back down slowly to anneal.
Where did you learn to blow glass that this wasn't explained?
